Siem Reap overview

There was a time when Siem Reap was nothing more than a few dirt roads and a couple of dusty guest houses. Those days are gone, as the town has seen massive development over the last few years due to the popularity of Angkor Wat. Even though Siem Reap now boasts four-star accommodation one can still see the remains of yesteryear in many of the sights and especially the smells that still remain. Regardless of the town itself the temples of Angkor Wat remain a must-see for those interested in ancient architecture, religion, and culture. Many people choose to fly directly to Siem Reap, which makes it easy to see much of the temple complex on even a short stay. It is still possible to avoid the crowds simply by hiring a driver for the day and asking him to take you to some of the more remote temples.
