Sihanoukville overview

Because it is only 185kms from Phnom Penh, Sihanoukville is not only Cambodia's most popular beach town but is rapidly becoming one of its urban centres. Depending on your point of view, Sihanoukville is still a quaint beach town that has not fallen victim to the overdevelopment that has ruined some of Thailand's best beach towns, or it is a dump of a town on some nice beach that needs someone to develop it even more. Whatever your point of view, more development is certainly coming and while Sihanoukville is unlikely to become Phuket, it is well on its way. The good news is that Sihanoukville is easy to get to and still offers great bargains and opportunities to hang out on beautiful beaches that aren't yet full of people selling fake tattoos and foot massages. It can get crowded here, especially during Cambodian holidays, so be sure and look at a calendar.
